The internet can be a strange place and at times may seem like a ruthless jungle. However, if you follow these 4 simple rules, you might get through it a little more smoothly.

Don’t Steal!

Don’t steal other people’s stuff! This is sometimes easier said than done as it can be tricky to find the original sources of a lot of online content. However, if you’re using images that you’ve found using a quick Google image search, you could get yourself into a lot of trouble.

If you want to use someone else’s work then all you need to do is ask. Of course, they might say no, but it’s worth a shot. However, when it comes to planning campaigns, the best option in always to use original material. If you can’t create it yourself, then you can hire freelancers using Fiverr.

If you only want to use a citation from someone, then that’s not technically stealing as you are only referencing another site. Therefore, you don’t need to ask permission but you do need to give the original source credit. You can do this by providing a link to their site.

Never try to plug your business in comments sections. You may get a lot of people viewing your link, but not very many people using it. This is because it always appears untrustworthy and will end up doing your image more harm than good.

Make it Easy to Unsubscribe from Your Mailing List

It’s never good when people unsubscribe from your mailing list. However, it’s also not a good idea to make it difficult for people to do so. If you want a good source of income, then your mailing list should be of a high quality. Keeping people subscribed when they don’t want to be is pointless and it means you sending mail unnecessarily to people who have no interest in opening or reading it. Therefore, keeping them subscribed by confusing them out of unsubscribing is pointless. It also tarnishes your image.

One thing you can do is add a ‘we’re sorry to see you leave’ page after the initial unsubscribe button. It doesn’t cause any confusion but it does give people a chance to change their minds. If you can give them a promise of something in return is they don’t unsubscribe, then you might convert a few stragglers who weren’t fully aware of your benefits beforehand.

Don’t Auto-DM People on Social Media

Auto DMs are pretty spammy and if you like someone’s account and start following them, the last thing you want is an inbox full of spam as a result. One of the key rules to follow is to see what you like about people’s pages and why. Find yourself a few role models who have a good following and then see how they do it. As we said earlier, you shouldn’t steal people’s work, but there’s nothing wrong with using it for inspiration.
