One of the first steps in affiliate marketing is choosing a niche. However, choosing the right niche can be tricky. Here is a quick guide to help you decide!

Every online marketer has to make a series of decisions before they get started. The trouble is, how can you make decisions without experience? Luckily, we’re here to help.

The type of products or services you choose to sell is up to you. However, you’re going to have to find the right balance between passion and practicality. On top of that, you want to have a good ROI (Return On Investment). Therefore, you need to know what to look out for.

One common piece of advice is to go for a niche that you like and have an interest in. This isn’t bad advice but, unfortunately, it’s not that easy. Personal preference should play a minor role. Instead, you ought to focus catering to your goals and resources.

Key Niche Types

There are two key types of niche to choose from: Temporary and Evergreen. Temporary niches are ones which are here today and gone tomorrow. Evergreen, on the other hand, can last for years.

Both niches have their pros and cons. Temporary niches can include things like Halloween costumes or Christmas gifts. Each year, you will have a window of opportunity. The bonus of this is that you can make a lot of money in a short space of time. The difficulty is that there are plenty of other months in the year, and they need to be filled. One way to do this is to plan a whole year’s worth of campaigns, attacking multiple different celebrations or holidays throughout the year. This is good if you get bored selling the same products all of the time. However, it will mean you changing your target audience throughout the year, and you’ll find that your skills develop far more slowly. What’s more, with each season comes increased risk, as trends and sales are more difficult to predict if you jump from one niche to another.

Evergreen niches allow you to focus your attention in a single place and attack an ever growing market. However, the downside is that there is a lot more competition. This shouldn’t put you off though. One of the great things about evergreen niches is that they allow you to grow campaign after campaign until you find a working formula. The bonus with this is that, once you find out what works, you can keep using it.

Examples of Evergreen niches include nutra, adult, crypto etc. Basically, things that have year-round demand.

Making the Right Decision

The first choice you have to make is whether you want to make money quickly for a short period or slowly for a long period. The second is between high-payout and easy promotion.

Some niches pay more than others, but that’s because the customer spends more. However, it’s more difficult to convince a customer to spend a large amount than a small amount. Again, you have to weigh up what works for you. Would you rather sell one car in 3 months or 3000 pens in one month for example? The difference here is that for every pen sold, you are able to see what is working and what isn’t, whereas it’s a little less clear when it comes to the car. You may have spent weeks trying to get one person to buy it, but the data you receive from a single sale isn’t enough to tell you what’s working. The pens, however, create a map of moving data that allows you to track what works.

The best thing to do, therefore, if you’re not sure of which niche you want to promote, is to look for something in the middle. That way, you’ll have a good balance between profitability and the number of units sold. By doing this, you can make a profit and get good data to work with.
