Getting Ready
Here are all the things you need to know when planning your trip to Thailand.
Visa Requirements
With millions of tourists from around the world flocking to Thailand each year, getting a short-stay visa is quite straight-forward. The typical document requirements are:
- Passport or travel document which is valid for at least 6 months
- A completed visa application form. Click here to view and download the application form.
- A recent passport photo (4x6cm)
- Return plane ticket paid in full.
- Proof of financial means (20,000 baht per person/40,000 baht per family)
Visa Fee:
The visa fee for entering Thailand is $30 per entrant or equivalent. However, tourist visa fees are subject to change without prior notice, so be sure to check before you leave.
If you arrive in Thailand via an international airport, you will be given a stamp with either a 30 or 60-day permission of stay. This will depend on whether your country has made a bilateral agreement on visa exemptions with Thailand.
If you enter Thailand via land border, you will be given a stamp with a 15-day permission of stay as a tourist.

Top tip:
If you ask your hotel for fast-track service you will be able to use the Diplomat line for customs, which will make your processing much faster. The hotel will charge for this service, but it should be less that $50 and will also give you airport pick up and transfer to your hotel.
What to Pack
Slip On Shoes
A lot of places in Thailand require you to leave your shoes at the door. This is especially true when entering temples, however, some cafes, restaurants, massage parlors and even shops adopt this policy.
Reusable Water Bottle
There are lots of places where you can fill up water bottles for just a few cents, so it’s worth taking a reusable bottle with you.
Rain Jacket
It rains quite a lot in Bangkok, even when it’s not the the rainy season from May-October. Therefore, to save yourself getting drenched while moving around the city, pack a raincoat or poncho.
Sweater or Sweatshirt
The temperatures are usually pretty balmy in Bangkok, but they can drop, so pack a sweater just in case.

Getting from the Airport
Fast Track Service is offered from most good hotels. This will allow you to use the diplomat line to get through customs and provide you with a driver from the airport to the hotel. The service costs extra but it should be less than $50.
The public transport system from the airport has undergone improvements in recent years and is now a good option, especially if you opt for the rail link.
Airport Rail Link
The Airport Rail Link is the cheapest and fastest way out of the airport and into downtown Bangkok. When you arrive, follow the signs for the train station, which is located on the basement floor. The express train will take you directly to Makkasan Station in about 15 minutes. From there you can connect to the local line and take it two stops to Phayathai Station, where you can connect to the Skytrain.
Taxis
Taxis provide a really quick and relatively cheap option to get you from the airport to the hotel. The taxi rank is located just outside the entrance to the main terminal.
Unlike most taxi ranks, there’s a desk where you’ll need to go to give the clerk your destination so that they can assign you a driver. If you plan on using this option, it’s best to get the name of your hotel written out in Thai to avoid any confusion.
The taxis are metered, so the price will depend on how far your hotel is from the airport. Alongside this, you’ll also need to pay an additional 50 Baht service fee plus any tolls encountered en route. It will depend on the route taken by the driver, but the quickest way into the city is on the expressway, which has a toll fee of 70 Baht, so don’t be surprised if your fare is about 130 Baht over the metered amount.
If a driver offers you a flat rate fee, don’t take it. It will always be more than the metered price.
The fastest way to get into the city is on the expressway and tolls will cost you an additional 70 baht or more depending on where you are going. Most taxi drivers are honest but some will try to offer you a flat rate to take you to your hotel. Insist on the meter.
Airport Limo
Airport limos are about 3 times more expensive than regular taxis, but you get what you pay for. If you want to get to your destination without the language barrier and in a more luxury car, then this is a good option.
Limos can be booked from the airport limo desk once you have cleared customs.
Express Airport Buses
There are four express bus routes which run from Bangkok airport to the city centre.
The express buses run from 4 am to 11pm and tickets can be purchased in the airport from the bus counter on level one.
Public Buses
Public buses run 24 hours a day from the airport and cost 35 baht per trip. To catch one, take the shuttle from the terminal to the transportation center. There are 12 different routes from Suvarnabhumi Airport to various parts of greater Bangkok. There’s also a government bus that will take you straight from the airport to Pattaya.
