When it comes to promoting products, you want to make sure you know exactly what it is you are selling. If not, then you could end up with a failed campaign and some pretty unhappy customers. In this article, we’ll look at some of the dos and don’ts of selecting a product to promote and how public reviews can make or break your campaign.

One of the first things you should always do, when looking for a new product to promote, is quite simply to Google it. After all, it’s one of the first things that the majority of your customers will do too. You should try to put yourself in their shoes and view the buying process as they would view it. A quick Google search of the product name + a few of the most commonly searched for keywords will give you a pretty good overview of how likely people will be to buy the product.

The quickest and easiest way for people to assess a product’s quality is by looking at the 5* system. If a customer Google’s a product and instantly sees a page filled with single star ratings, then they will run a mile. If, on the other hand, they see lots of shiny gold stars, then their trust in the product will be secured.

Promote New Products

One of the best ways of ensuring that you aren’t being hurt by negative reviews is to promote new products and offers early. By doing this, you can be sure that, at least at the early stages, any negative criticism won’t hurt your campaign. You can also help promote your products by reviewing them yourself. This might seem like an underhand tactic but the truth is, the competition does it too, as do all of the major global companies.

Remember the Samsung Galaxy Note 7? The one which used to spontaneously combust. Here’s what the first page of Google looks like when you search for it:

These reviews probably weren’t written by the multiple people who ended up in hospital or on planes which had to be diverted as a result of their phones exploding. Yet, somehow, it still gets 4.5-5* reviews.

If there is one thing that you should take from this it’s that, quite often, reviews can’t be trusted, however, people will trust them. There are huge companies who make their money by ensuring that products appear in a good light online and if you aren’t making attempts to ensure that the products you promote follow suit, then you will lose customers.
